Some people will tell you to get started with credit cards to establish your financial status through credit bureaus and eventually as you add to your creditworthiness you will be offered or be able to apply for and get additional credit as you build your credit repayment history.
That is all well and good if you have some means of getting that first credit card. There seems to be a problem to obtain a credit card when you have no credit. You could chase your own tail around for awhile trying to get around the chicken or the egg scenario or you could get a secured credit card.
Many credit card issuers have programs especially for those with no or bad credit. Without a credit card you can’t rent a car, buy an airline tickets or even rent a better hotel room. But if you buy your credit card by depositing cash against the credit card usage (a secured card) you expect to have in a month. Then as you spend the money your balance will dwindle or you can replace the money keeping a spendable balance on the card.
As far as the credit agencies are concerned however you have used a credit card and paid the amount due as arranged. That makes you a class act and establishes credit bureau entries that say your a good risk. Gather enough of those and you can soon qualify for unsecured credit cards based entirely on you.
